T-Shirt GSM Explained: 190 vs 220 vs 240 GSM
GSM means grams per square metre: how much one square metre of the fabric weighs. A higher GSM means a denser, heavier fabric that feels more substantial, hangs with more structure and is less see-through; a lower GSM feels lighter and airier. GSM is a weight, not a quality score: a well-made 190 GSM Supima jersey and a 240 GSM drop-needle polo are both good choices for different jobs.
What different weights feel like
| Fabric weight | How it feels | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 160 GSM | Very light and thin; light colours can be see-through. | Hot days, sleepwear, layering underneath. |
| 160–200 GSM | Mid-weight; soft with some body, opaque in most colours. | Everyday T-shirts, office-casual, travel. |
| 200–230 GSM | Substantial; holds a cleaner shape. | Classic pique polos and structured tees. |
| Over 230 GSM | Heavy and structured; noticeably weighty. | Textured polos, cooler evenings, a dressier look. |
The ROKKX weights, and why each one
Each ROKKX Supima style uses the fabric weight that suits its knit. These weights come from the production specification for every colour and size.
| ROKKX style | Knit | Weight | Why this weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew T-shirt | Single jersey | 190 GSM | Soft and breathable for daily wear, with enough body to stay opaque and keep a clean neckline. |
| Full-sleeve T-shirt | Single jersey | 190 GSM | Light enough for air-conditioned offices and travel without feeling heavy on the arms. |
| Pique polo | Pique | 220 GSM | The raised pique texture needs more body to hold a crisp collar and placket. |
| Drop-needle polo | Drop needle | 240 GSM | The heaviest of the four, so the vertical texture stands out and the polo looks smarter. |
Higher GSM is not automatically better
A heavier fabric is not a better fabric, just a different one. Two T-shirts at the same GSM can feel completely different because the fibre, yarn and finishing matter as much as the weight. A 190 GSM jersey made from extra-long staple Supima cotton will feel smoother and softer than a heavier T-shirt spun from short-fibre cotton.
Think of GSM as telling you about drape, warmth and opacity, and the fibre and finishing as telling you about softness, surface and colour.
Choosing a weight for Bengaluru
- Everyday and office: a 180–200 GSM jersey T-shirt is comfortable through most of the year and works under an air-conditioned office’s chill.
- Smart-casual days: a 220 GSM pique polo looks sharper and keeps its collar shape through the day.
- Evenings, dinners and cooler months: a 240 GSM drop-needle polo has a richer texture and a dressier hang.
- White and light colours: stay at 180 GSM or above so the T-shirt is not see-through.
How to check GSM before you buy
Look for the fabric weight on the product page; brands that know their fabric usually publish it. If it is missing, ask. Weight on its own is not enough, so also check the fibre (for example 100% Supima cotton), the knit, any finishing such as mercerisation or pre-shrinking, and the care instructions.
Questions, answered
What GSM is best for a T-shirt?
For an everyday T-shirt, 160–200 GSM is the comfortable middle: soft, breathable and opaque in most colours. ROKKX Supima crew and full-sleeve T-shirts are 190 GSM.
Is 240 GSM too heavy for a polo?
Not for a textured polo. A 240 GSM drop-needle polo feels substantial and looks dressier, which suits evenings and cooler weather. For hot afternoons, a lighter jersey T-shirt is more comfortable.
Does a higher GSM T-shirt last longer?
Not necessarily. Durability depends on the fibre, yarn, knit, finishing and care as much as the weight. Extra-long staple cotton such as Supima generally resists pilling better than short-fibre cotton at the same weight.
